These 3 pillars tend to encompass the goals of almost everyone. What we try to do at Triage is that each pillar is getting some attention.
Focus too much on body comp and you may sacrifice your performance in the gym or ability to run, or you might push so hard that you hurt
both physical and mental health.
How do we combat this?
1.) Set performance goals — If you are getting very lean, but your performance is tanking, maybe we need to make changes? If you’ve only ever focused on aesthetics, maybe it’s time to see what that body can do?
2.) Review your health — Maybe over or undereating for body comp are hurting your health? Have you checked your blood pressure? Blood lipids? Are you sleeping well? How’s your
mental health?
3.) Ask “why?” — Sometimes, an honest conversation about the desire to focus on aesthetics, especially if a persistent and potentially dysfunction desire, is necessary. It may be that you’ve just never known any other goal, or is it to compensate for other areas of your life, personality, or character, that you haven’t taken care of?
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with focusing on your physique. Just keep the other pillars in mind too, and be
honest with yourself about why you’re pursuing what you are and how that serves you and those around you long term.
