Â
Recently, we have been focusing a lot of our attention on debunking health, exercise, and nutrition misinformation we encounter online. This is something that many of our followers seem to benefit from, but occasionally, there's a comment along the lines of "now I don't know what's true, I know you're telling me what not
to do, so what should I believe?!". This is a very valuable point, and there's an important caveat before I point you in the right direction...
Â
The reason most people end up confused and on the wrong path is because they want something special, something extra, something different. Most people are not happy with sensible advice and guidelines. This leads them to
seek out nonsense supplements, esoteric health practices, one-weird-trick exercises, and more. Often, these supposed solutions are for made-up problems, and this is where quacks & gurus can really trick you: they sell you both the problem and the solution.
Â
This puts those practicing evidence-based nutrition & exercise prescription in an odd position, where
someone is asking for "the solution to adrenal fatigue". The evidence-based practitioner will likely assert that adrenal fatigue does not exist, which is true, but the individual receiving this news often hears "your problems don't exist". This then requires a careful approach to dissect why the person thinks they have adrenal fatigue, what their initial symptoms were, why they sought out this diagnosis, etc. Eventually, it may be the case that the person was tired and overweight,
but instead of delivering the probable reality (more sleep, better nutrition & exercise), the guru sells both a made-up diagnosis and solutions (often involving expensive supplements to "support the adrenals").
Â
In short, the process of debunking and undoing the work of gurus can be laborious, and the solution out the other end is often a lot less attractive.
So, again, I hear you say: what should I actually believe and do?
Â
Well, you're in luck.
