Hey,
I have been thinking a lot about retirement lately. Not because I am anywhere near that, but because we coach a lot of people
that are getting closer to that age, and I do have a lot of family friends that are approaching that age. A few thoughts have occurred to me on this.
When most people think about retirement, they picture freedom. No alarm clocks. Time to travel. Days spent with grandkids. Finally doing all the things they put off during their
working years.
They plan for that freedom with money. They have pensions, savings, and investments. And that’s certainly smart (and if you aren't thinking about this, you should be doing this too!). But there’s one thing hardly anyone talks about, and it’s actually a linchpin piece that can make or break your ability to live your
retirement dreams: your body.
The truth is that your money is worthless to your dreams, if your body can’t keep up.
I'm sure you have seen it in your own life. Someone
works hard, saves diligently, and finally retires ... only to find out their health won’t let them live the life they imagined.
Lifting a suitcase into the overhead bin is too much. Kneeling down to play with grandkids feels impossible. Attempting to walk ten miles through a beautiful city leaves them exhausted after the first
hour.
That’s not freedom. That’s being held hostage by a body that wasn’t trained for the long game.
The good news is that you can change that. Just like you build a
financial pension through steady deposits, you can build what I call a “physiological pension.”
Every workout, every walk, every bit of strength you build today is a deposit that your future self can withdraw when it matters most.
The problem is, most people don’t know if they’re actually on track. Are you fit enough for the retirement you want? Or are you underfunded, not financially, but physically?
That’s exactly why we built the Retirement Fitness Calculator.
In less
than a minute, you’ll see what level of fitness you should have right now if you want to remain active and independent into your 70s and beyond. Then you’ll see where you should stand today, if you are to be at that level when you are in your 70s.
Sometimes the gap is small.
Sometimes it’s bigger than expected. But either way, the awareness is important.
I’ll warn you though, many people discover they’re actually behind. And yes, that can be uncomfortable. But just like realising you’re behind on retirement savings, it’s not the end of the world. It’s the beginning of a plan. Once you know, you can
start making the right deposits now, so that when retirement comes, your body is ready to actually execute your dreams.
So, take a minute, right now, and check your physiological pension account. Don’t put it off. Don’t assume “I’ll be fine.” See where you stand.
