We just posted this week's Triage Militia article, which is on the anatomy and function of the pancreas. I thought it might be nice to give you guys the summary points, as it's nice to at least have some idea of what goes on within these mad
bodies of ours.....
The pancreas is an organ that is involved in both digestion and assimilation. These intrinsically linked systems are regulated in much the same way the stomach is regulated. The use of signalling molecules is heavily utilised and the nervous system ultimately is dictating what is going on. There is a delicate balance between the rest and
digest system, and the fight or flight system and both system have effects on the pancreas’ role. The pancreas is involved in the secretion of pancreatic juices which serve to neutralise chyme acidity and break down the food you eat through digestive enzymes. It also secretes both “break down” hormones (glucagon) and “storage” hormones (insulin) and serves to
provide the body with the ability to regulate its blood glucose levels and overall energy. The pancreas is a very important organ that does a lot and doesn’t get the respect it deserves.
That may seem like random mumbo-jumbo to some of you, but even if it is, it's just a reminder that there is so much going on under the hood that we often don't
appreciate. Each and every thing you put in your mouth is going to have an effect on your physiology. That could be positive, negative or neutral. Ultimately, it's up to you to push the needle in the right direction by making as many positive choices as possible.... if you wish to preserve your health in the long run!
Yours in Health,
Gary McGowan
