Triage Method Newsletter - 14/09/2020
|
In last week's newsletter, we discuss the role that "health" or "fitness" behaviours play in your life. Are they overreaching? Or just right? Have you thought about it?
Additionally, as always, we have a number of recommended resources, as well as the content we shared on our social media this week.
Enjoy!

Is Health & Fitness Your Religion?
|
Following Nietzsche’s proclamation of the death of God, there’s a deep question that one must ask....
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💡What have you filled the God-shaped hole in your chest with?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In this week's podcast, I had the pleasure of discussing this topic with Dr Mike Banna as it relates to “health”. For some of us, that God-shaped hole gets filled with the pursuit of something called health, or maybe “wellbeing”.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🔍 How does that manifest?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
All one has to do is observe the behaviours of many in the online health space to realise that health is often treated as an end in and of itself. Meaning is found through orienting towards one’s idea of “the good”, which in this case, might be eating well or exercising (great!), or severely restrictive nutrition, tens of supplements, a convoluted morning and evening routine, etc. (maybe not so great?).

I’m not here to tell you that there’s a problem with how you live your life, not at all. Rather, I’d encourage you to ask the question “what/who is guiding my actions?”. We all have our own God-like ideals; it might be health/wellbeing, it might be social justice, or it might be the pursuit of excellence. It needn’t be explicitly stated in order to exist, but scrutinising it might be a good idea.

I know, I know, it may seem like a stretch to tie religion to health and well-being, but when you see someone engaging in an hour of meditation, two hours of exercise, an hour of preparing bland meals, a one hour pre-bed routine, etc., one must ask “for what end?”.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Is it really a case that health is the true ideal, or is it the feeling that comes from taking these actions and thus feeling like you are oriented towards some sort of purpose?

I don’t know man, but that’s why we should think about it...
